Matt enters his fourth season in the Indians organization after being named Major League Assistant Hitting Coach in November 2013...This marks his 22nd season in professional baseball, his 14th in a coaching capacity...Prior to joining Cleveland he spent his entire baseball career with the Tampa Bay Rays after being selected in the 8th round of the 1996 draft...Began his coaching career during the 2004 season as a catching instructor and coach at Short Season-A Hudson Valley...Managed in the Tampa Bay system from 2006-2009 and was the Tampa Bay Player Development Hitting Coordinator over four seasons, 2010-13, where he tutored many player that went on to appear in the Major Leagues (Desmond Jennings, Stephen Vogt, John Jaso, Tim Beckham).

Played seven seasons in the Tampa Bay system as a catcher, first baseman and corner outfielder, topping out at Triple-A Durham in 2002...Compiled a career Minor League average of .286 with 202 RBI in 415 games (.758OPS)…Became the first Rays player to hit for the cycle on July 6, 1997 vs. Hickory...Went to Minor League camp with the Yankees in 2003 before ending career...Played with Mickey Callaway during his Rays tenure.
