COaching Career
In Farrells 2nd season as Red Sox pitching coach in 2008, the Boston staff posted a 4.01 ERA, 4th
in the American League...Club finished 4th in the majors with a .250 opponents batting average
against...Over his 2 seasons with Boston this staff has logged a 3.94 ERA, 2nd in the A.L. behind
only Toronto (3.75)...Prior to 2007, Farrell served as the Cleveland Indians Director of Player Development
since November 2001...In that role, oversaw all elements of the Tribes player development
system, including the organizations 6 minor league affiliates and the Latin American
programs in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic...Also supervised the signing of all minor
league free agents while assisting in major league player acquisitions...With the Indians, was
instrumental in the development of such pitchers as Fernando Cabrera, Fausto Carmona, Jason
Davis, Jeremy Guthrie, Edward Mujica, Rafael Perez, and Jeremy Sowers...Under Farrells tutelage,
the Indians were named Organization of the Year in consecutive seasons in 2003-04 by USA Todays
Sports Weekly and were named by Baseball America as having the number one farm system
in professional baseball in 2003.
After his retirement as an active player, spent 5 seasons from 1997-2001 as Assistant Coach/Pitching
& Recruiting Coordinator at Oklahoma State University, completing his bachelors degree at
OSU in 1996...With the Cowboys, instilled new disciplines and methods into the program and
mentored 14 pitchers that were drafted or signed as non-drafted free agents at the professional
level, including 1999 National League Rookie of the Year Scott Williamson.
Playing Career
Selected by Cleveland in the 2nd round of the 1984 First-Year Player Draft after an outstanding
career at Oklahoma State University...The righthander was 36-46 with a 4.56 ERA in 116 major
league games (109 starts) with the Indians (1987-90; 1995), Angels (1993-94), and Tigers (1996).
Went 28-25 with 12 complete games and a 3.86 ERA (209 ER/487.1 IP) in 72 games (all but 2 as a
starter) in his first 3 big league seasons from 1987-89...Recorded a career-high 14 wins in 1988 and
posted a 3.63 ERA with 7 complete games in 1989 but was hampered by injuries for the remainder
of his playing career, missing the entire 1991 and 1992 seasons with right elbow problems...After
returning to the big leagues in 1993, combined to go 4-16 with a 7.77 ERA (99 ER/114.2 IP) in 27
games (22 starts) over the remainder of his career...Appeared in just 6 games (5 starts) over his
final 3 major league seasons.

John and his wife, Sue, reside in Westlake, Ohio...They have 3 sons Jeremy, Shane, and Luke...
Jeremy is an infielder in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization...In 2008, John participated in the Red
Sox Destinations program in spring training; took part in a baseball clinic in Japan; attended a
Mass Mentoring Fundraiser breakfast; participated in the Babe Ruth Coaches Clinic; spoke during
the Boston Parks & Recreation Departments summer program; and attended Picnic in the Park to
benefit the Red Sox Foundation.
