Captain steers Sox to win

Jason Varitek's two-run double in the fourth inning got the Sox on the board and gave them an early lead. Daisuke Matsuzaka would do the rest. Dice-K allowed the Mariners two runs with 10 strikeouts over seven innings, but the bullpen held off a late charge.

Left-hander Jarrod Washburn allowed four runs over 6 1/3 innings, and the Mariners got solo homers from Adrian Beltre and Yuniesky Betancourt. Kenji Johjima added an RBI single in the eighth, but the Seattle rally fell a run short of the mark against the Red Sox.
