A three-run fifth inning was all Josh Beckett, who gave up just two runs, needed to pick up his Major League-leading 11th win of the season. The Red Sox produced their four runs on RBI singles by David Ortiz and Mike Lowell, Manny Ramirez's sac fly and Jason Varitek's homer.

Jake Peavy was hoping Sunday would be the day for his 10th win, but the righty did not have his ace stuff as the Padres dropped the finale to the Red Sox. San Diego did close the gap to one run after Terrmel Sledge's two-run double in the fifth, but that was last time the Padres threatened.
