The Red Sox were unable to get in gear on Opening Day, as starter Curt Schilling was tagged for five runs on eight hits in four rocky innings and the lineup was stifled by new Royals ace right-hander Gil Meche. David Ortiz represented the Boston offense with an RBI double in the first.
