4/23/2014 | Pipeline Perspectives: Ventura best 'true' rookie so far

It's probably not fair to extrapolate numbers after just three starts, but if Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura keeps his ERA under 3.00 and his K/9 rate over 10, he could very easily give Jose Abreu and Masahiro Tanaka a run for their money in the voting for this year's American League Rookie of the Year Award.

4/22/2014 | Vargas-Masterson a matchup of efficient hurlers

Left-hander Jason Vargas, in his four starts for the Royals, has been the model of efficiency. He's thrown at least seven innings in each outing and his 1.24 ERA was third in the American League. His mound opponent on Wednesday night, Indians right-hander Justin Masterson, has been pretty efficient himself lately with 16 strikeouts in his last 11 innings.

4/22/2014 | Squirrel avoids contact in Royals-Indians tilt

At least no baseball struck the squirrel that cavorted on the field during the Royals-Indians game on Monday night. The same couldn't be said for a seagull that intervened in their game on June 10, 2009, at Progressive Field. In fact, the seagull proved to be in play in that contest.

This bullpen business seems to suit Danny Duffy pretty well. In three games, he has thrown 6 1/3 shutout innings with nine strikeouts against two walks and three hits.
