Red Sox recall right-hander Allen Webster

Right-hander Pedro Beato Optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-hander Allen Webster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Pedro Beato was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game in Detroit. Webster is scheduled to start tonight's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park at 7:15 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

This marks the third major league stint for Webster in 2013. The 23-year-old has made two starts for Boston and is 0-1 with an 11.74 ERA (10 ER/7.2 IP), four walks, and seven strikeouts in those outings. He last appeared for the Red Sox in a start on May 8 against the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park. With Pawtucket this season, Webster has gone 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA (17 ER/51.1 IP) with 22 walks and 56 strikeouts. He has held opponents to a .166 batting average (29-for-175), and allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts.

Beato, 26, was recalled from Pawtucket on Sunday for his first major league stint of the season. He threw 2.0 scoreless innings over a pair of relief outings for the Red Sox, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. In 19 relief appearances for the PawSox this season, he has gone 4-1 with two saves, a 1.89 ERA (7 ER/33.1 IP), and 29 strikeouts.
