Sore hamstring sidelines Manny

Red Sox slugger hopes to return to lineup Monday vs. Phils

CINCINNATI -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona is hopeful to have slugger Manny Ramirez back for the club's series opener with the Phillies on Monday night.

Francona made the announcement on Sunday, which was another day of rest for Ramirez's sore right hamstring.

Ramirez started on Friday night and batted three times before coming out in the middle of the seventh with soreness where his hamstring meets the knee. He went 1-for-3 and drove in Boston's only run in a 3-1 loss.

"We played him and ended up taking him out halfway through," said Francona. "It doesn't make a lot of sense to [have him start Sunday]. Give him another day and hopefully he feels better [Monday]."

While he didn't start Saturday, Ramirez pinch-hit in the top of the 10th for Jonathan Papelbon and struck out on three pitches.

"As much as we want him in the lineup, playing half a game doesn't really help us," said Francona. "Just keep checking him out."
