Schilling threw 25 pitches off the mound and is expected to throw 35 by Friday. The move to the mound shows significant progress for the 41-year-old right-hander, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list during Spring Training due to an injured right throwing shoulder.
"His only complaint was that he only threw 22 strikes," Sox manager Terry Francona said.
Francona said Schilling is still in the arm and shoulder strengthening stage, which will continue to increase over time.
The Red Sox skipper said it'll be up to rehab coordinator Mike Reinold and pitching coach John Farrell to map out just the remainder of Schilling's rehab schedule.
"Understandably, he's excited," Francona said. "He's starting to talk about hitters. It's exciting for us."
