Colon set for extended Spring Training
Right-hander to pitch two innings in Sarasota on Monday
By Ian Browne / MLB.com
Colon had been progressing nicely en route to earning a spot in the Boston rotation before going down with a right oblique injury after his start for Triple-A Pawtucket on April 3.
After the trip to Sarasota, Colon will join the Red Sox in Detroit so he can be examined by the team's medical staff. And after that, he'll return to Triple-A Pawtucket and get back on a regular progression of starts.
From there, his only real obstacle to getting to Boston will be to build up his pitch count.
"I actually think this Florida thing is good," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "You know, the weather will be good. [He can] get a sweat going. It's a nice intermediate step before you get to Triple-A and back to us, so I think it will work real well."
