Red Sox to place Cora on 15-day DL
Infielder continues to feel discomfort in his right elbow
By Ian Browne / MLB.com
The move will be made retroactive to Thursday, which was the same day Cora felt a twinge in his elbow while making a throw from third base during infield practice.
"If I'm not 100 percent, I'm not going to play, so why be here, you know?" said Cora. "I'll get healthy and I don't have to be thinking, 'I have a chance to play tomorrow' or whatever. I won't push myself too hard. When I'm healthy, I'm healthy."
Cora will get an MRI in the next couple of days as a precaution.
"For his piece of mind, I think it's important to get this MRI," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "And then when he comes back, he'll be OK. I think he's a little in between. I think he wants to fight it, but watching him, I think sometimes we've got to step in and not let a guy hurt himself. He's going about it right."
Among the candidates to be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket are Keith Ginter and Joe Thurston.
