Moss optioned back to Minors
By Mike Petraglia / Special to MLB.com
On Tuesday, he got the Opening Day call in right field when J.D. Drew's lower back stiffened while running in the outfield before the game. Moss didn't miss a beat, becoming the hero with a run-scoring single in a three-run sixth-inning rally and a game-tying home run off A's closer Huston Street in the ninth as the Red Sox rallied to a 6-5, 10-inning win.
On Wednesday, Moss started again in right, but he had the misfortune of facing the electric stuff of Rich Harden, striking out three times before being taken out for pinch-hitter Sean Casey in the ninth as Boston fell to Oakland, 5-1.
Afterward, the outfielder boarded a plane with the rest of his Red Sox teammates bound for Los Angeles just after finding out he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
The move leaves the club with four outfielders: Jacoby Ellsbury, Manny Ramirez, Coco Crisp and Drew. The team will re-evaluate Drew's back once it lands in Los Angeles and determine if he is ready to play when the Red Sox resume their regular-season series with the A's on Tuesday night in Oakland.
Moss' option puts Boston's active roster at 26 players.
