Schilling seeks different result vs. Halos

Los Angeles (71-50) at Boston (73-49), Saturday, 7:05 p.m. ET

The Red Sox welcome the Angels for the third time in two days on Saturday.

Like the rest of the team, Curt Schilling is no stranger to these Angels. He last faced them 12 days ago, losing, 4-2, on Aug. 6.

His opponent that day: Jered Weaver, who allowed just two earned runs in six innings. Again, Weaver gets the start against Schilling. The 24-year-old former first-round pick has acquitted himself nicely in his second season in the big leagues, with an 8-5 record and a 3.85 ERA -- even though opponents have reached base at a much higher clip than they did against Weaver in 2006, when he held batters to a .209 average.

This season, Weaver's opponents are batting .277 against him and striking out less (6.22 strikeouts per nine innings, as opposed to 7.68 in 2006). Throughout his young career, nevertheless, Weaver has had a handle on the Red Sox, with a 2.89 ERA in 18 2/3 innings.

Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (6-5, 4.06 ERA)
Schilling, who missed nearly two months with right shoulder tendinitis, hasn't been quite back to his old self in his two starts since rehabilitation, despite advance reports that his fastball has regained its old life. He struck out zero batters in his last start in Baltimore, although he didn't allow any earned runs in the process. Overall, Schilling has given up just four earned runs in 12 innings since his stint on the disabled list.

LAA: RHP Jered Weaver (8-5, 3.85 ERA)
Weaver was superb in the series finale against Minnesota on Sunday, tossing 7 1/3 innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs. He was extremely efficient, using only 93 pitches and employing an effective breaking ball that kept the Twins off balance for much of the contest. Weaver picked up his first win since July 27.

Player to watch
First baseman Kevin Youkilis has reached base four times, including a homer, in 10 plate appearances against Weaver.
