Gabbard gets his first look at Tigers

Boston (53-32) at Detroit (50-34), Saturday, 7:05 p.m. ET

It certainly isn't a grudge match, but Jeremy Bonderman can get some revenge against Red Sox Nation.

Bonderman, who finished second to Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima in the Final Vote for the All-Star Game, will make his first start since hearing the news against the very same Red Sox on Saturday.

Starting for the Sox will be Kason Gabbard. His last time out, the second-year lefty struck out five, allowing three earned runs over 5 2/3 frames, and earned his second win of the season. He has never faced Detroit.

Though Bonderman has yet to see the Red Sox this season, the Tigers got their fill of Okajima in a May 17 doubleheader. Okajima threw in both games that day and didn't allow a hit, and picked up the second save of his career in the nightcap.

Pitching matchup
BOS: LHP Kason Gabbard (2-0, 5.79 ERA)
Gabbard couldn't make it out of the sixth on Monday against the Rangers, but he was otherwise effective in a game in which he received seven runs of support.

DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (9-1, 3.58 ERA)
Bonderman followed his first loss of the season by tossing eight scoreless innings last Sunday night in a nationally televised duel with Minnesota's Scott Baker, earning the win in a 1-0 victory. He's 3-4 in his career against the Red Sox, but he had two quality starts against them last year while striking out 14 batters over 15 1/3 combined innings.

Player to watch
One would think that David Ortiz would have an advantage against Bonderman, but Big Papi has struggled against the right-hander in 19 career at-bats, with just two hits and four strikeouts.
