The Red Sox today acquired outfielder Brian Anderson from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for outfielder Mark Kotsay. Anderson will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Anderson, 27, batted .238 (44-for-185) with two home runs and 13 RBI in 65 games for the White Sox this season. He made 61 appearances in center field (49 starts) and six in right (two starts) before being optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 20. The right-handed hitter reached base safely in nine of his 11 games for the Knights, going 12-for-43 (.279) with two homers and five RBI.

A first-round selection (15th overall) by Chicago in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Anderson owns a .225 batting average, 20 home runs and 75 RBI in 334 career Major League games since making his debut in 2005. He has committed just five errors in 316 games in the outfield (568 total chances) with just two in his last 166 games. His .991 career fielding percentage ranks ninth among A.L. outfielders with at least 300 games played since 2005.

Kotsay, 33, was designated for assignment on July 24. He hit .257 (19-for-74) with two doubles, one home run and five RBI over 27 games with the Red Sox in 2009 after beginning the year on the disabled list while recovering from back surgery. Signed as a free agent on January 15, 2009, he appeared in 19 games at first base (12 starts), two in left field (one start), four in center field (three starts) and four in right field (one start) this season. Originally acquired by the Red Sox in a trade from Atlanta on August 27, 2008, Kotsay hit .241 (38-for-158) with one home run and 17 RBI in 49 total games with Boston.
