The Boston Red Sox today activated infielder Kevin Youkilis from the 15-day disabled list. Following last night's game, the club optioned infielder Gil Velazquez to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Youkilis, 30, was placed on the disabled list on May 12 (retroactive to May 5) with a left oblique strain. He played in two rehabilitation games with Triple-A Pawtucket, May 18-19, and went 0-for-6 with a walk, starting at first base and designated hitter respectively. In 25 games with the Red Sox this season, Youkilis is hitting .393 (35-for-89) with 11 doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored and 16 walks.

Selected by Boston in the eighth round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Youkilis has a .293 (590-for-2,011) career average with 149 doubles, eight triples, 72 home runs, 334 RBI, 348 runs scored and 293 walks in 578 Major League games over parts of six seasons with the Red Sox (2004-09).

Velazquez, 29, made one appearance at shortstop and was hit by a pitch in his only plate appearance since his recall on May 12. Overall in his two stints with Boston this season, he has gone 0-for-2 in six games while appearing at shortstop and third base. In 16 games for Pawtucket in 2009, Velazquez has posted a .207 average (12-for-58) with two doubles and four RBI. He has made 11 appearances at shortstop and six at second base for the PawSox.
