BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Brandon Moss on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 3, following his surgery for an appendectomy on Saturday.

To replace Moss on the active roster, righthanded pitcher Craig Hansen has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Hansen, who will wear #56, will be in uniform for tonight's game in Detroit.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Hansen is 1-0, 1.62 with 17 strikeouts in 16.2 innings in 11 appearances at Pawtucket and has allowed a run in just one game this season. He issued all 4 runs/3 ER on April 29 at Rochester. The righthander has held opponents to .107 batting average and defeated Louisville on April 9 in his only decision.

This is his 2nd stint with Red Sox in 2008. Hansen was recalled on April 23 and lost to Los Angeles that night, allowing 2 hits and one run in 1.2 innings with 3 strikeouts, matching his career high in the latter category. He issued the game-winning homer to Casey Kotchman in the 6th inning and returned to Pawtucket after that game.

Hansen was selected by Boston in the 1st round of 2005 1st Year Player Draft. He is 2-3, 6.54 in 43 major league games with the Red Sox in 2005, 2006, and 2008.

Moss was released from Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday. He is batting .286 with 2 homers and 3 RBI in 6 games in two stints with Boston this season.
