FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nancy and Sam Noyes, a mother and son team from Eliot, ME, were selected as the winners of the Take Me Out to the Ballgame Red Sox Spring Training Fan Talent Competition. Their enthusiastic rendition of the classic song earned them the grand prize, and an opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to perform Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the 7th Inning Stretch of a Red Sox home game during the 2008 season.

Nancy and Sam Noyes (rhymes with "Joyce") showcased their singing skills on March 11 prior to the Red Sox Spring Training match-up against the New York Mets, the only game they could attend while in Florida. They were inspired to perform after reading about the competition and printed out the song lyrics to practice in advance. Ms. Noyes and her son, age 8, will perform at Fenway Park on a mutually-agreeable game day later this year.

Organized as part of Major League Baseball's 2008 Opening Week initiative, the event drew close to 150 contestants from Canada and from more than 21 U.S. states, including Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Contestants were judged on the basis of talent, creativity, their love of the game of baseball, and of the Red Sox, and the intangible quality that is present in all those who are born entertainers.

The success of the Spring Training promotion has inspired the Red Sox to bring the competition back to Fenway Park and fans will have the opportunity to deliver their best rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame during home games throughout the month of April. The winner of the second round of the fan talent competition will also receive the opportunity to perform the song during the 7th Inning Stretch of a Red Sox home game during the 2008 season.

The Spring Training competition ran from March 4 through March 13 at City of Palms Park. Representatives from Fort Myers-based Florida Gulf Coast University assisted Red Sox personnel in the operation of the event.

The first runner up in the competition was 85-year-old World War II veteran Harvey Kaplan from Fort Myers, FL. Mr. Kaplan will receive a chance to perform the 7th Inning Stretch classic at the Spring Training game against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 19.
