BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today placed lefthander Mike Holtz on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 17) with a left elbow strain and recalled lefthander Abe Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.

Alvarez will wear number 59 and is available for tonight's game in Philadelphia.

The 23-year-old Alvarez is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA (10 ER/41.1 IP) in seven starts for Pawtucket this season, tied for second in the International League in wins and tied for seventh in ERA. The southpaw has limited opponents to a .197 batting average, including a .167 mark (5-for-30) by lefthanders and a .205 mark (25-for-122) by righthanders. Alvarez has allowed three earned runs or less in all seven outings this season, including 6.0 scoreless frames his last time out May 7 at Rochester, a 5-2 victory. Alvarez was scheduled to pitch yesterday but was postponed due to rain.

Alvarez has made three major league stints with the Red Sox during the last two seasons, going 0-1 with an 11.05 ERA (9 ER/14.1 IP) in three big league appearances (one start). He was named Double-A Portland's 2004 Pitcher of the Year (10-9, 3.59 ERA, 26 starts) and was named to the Triple-A International League's mid-season All-Star team in 2005 with Pawtucket (11-6, 4.85 ERA, 26 starts). Alvarez was originally selected by the Red Sox in the second round (49th overall) of the 2003 June Draft out of Long Beach State University.

Holtz began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket before having his contract purchased by the Red Sox on May 9. In three Red Sox relief outings, Holtz has no record with a 16.20 ERA (3 ER/1.2 IP). With Pawtucket, Holtz has no record and three saves with a 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP) in 11 relief appearances.
