BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today acquired catcher Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, righthanded pitcher Cla Meredith, and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.
Mirabelli is batting .182 (4-for-22) in 14 games with San Diego this season. The 35-year-old righthanded batter has made five starts at catcher for the Padres, throwing out two of six runners attempting to steal.
Traded by Boston to San Diego for infielder Mark Loretta on December 7, 2005, Mirabelli spent four and a half seasons with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Texas Rangers on June 12, 2001. He appeared in 282 games in that span with a .253 (190-for-751) average, 37 homers and 119 RBI. He had his best offensive season in 2004, when he batted .281 with nine homers and 32 RBI in 59 games.
From 2002-05 Mirabelli was behind the plate for 704.2 of the 779.1 regular season innings thrown by Tim Wakefield. That included 29 of Wakefield's 33 starts in 2005 as Mirabelli missed four starts as a result of being disabled with a left wrist sprain from May 19-June 12. Overall, he batted .228 with six homers and 18 RBI in 50 games/33 starts at catcher for Boston last season.
Selected by San Francisco in the 5th round of the 1992 1st Year Player Draft, Mirabelli made his major league debut in 1996 and appeared in 140 games with the Giants over parts or all of five seasons through 2000. He was traded to the Rangers in March 2001. Mirabelli has a career major league average of .240 (283-for-1181) with 47 homers and 165 RBI in 459 games.
Bard is hitting .278 in seven games/six starts for the Red Sox in 2006 after being acquired from the Cleveland Indians in a six-player trade in January. Meredith, who pitched in three games with the Red Sox in 2005, has no record and a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP) in eight relief appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
