Boston Red Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria, who hit safely in each game last week, has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 29th. Bank of America, the official bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the bank's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In six games last week, Renteria batted a league-best .667 (16-24) with two home runs, six RBI, seven runs scored and a .680 on-base percentage. He led the AL with 25 total bases while finishing fourth in slugging percentage at 1.042. The All-Star shortstop had five multi-hit games in a week that saw his batting average climb 56 points. In Boston's weekend series against the New York Yankees, Renteria went 10-for-12 with six RBI, including his fourth career grand slam. This is the first career A.L. Player of the Week Award for Renteria, who won the N.L. weekly award twice. It marks the 95th time a member of the Boston Red Sox has captured the weekly honor since the award's inception in 1974, which is more than any other club.

Other candidates included Richard Hidalgo (.571, 4 HR, 7 RBI) of the Texas Rangers; Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro (.471, 3 HR, 4 RBI); Dallas McPherson (.320, 3 HR, 6 RBI) of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and Seattle's Raul Ibañez (.421, 3 2B).

Pitchers on the ballot included Danys Baez (4 G, 3 SV) of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays; Minnesota's Johan Santana (1-0, 1 CG); and Toronto's Roy Halladay (1-0, 1 CG).

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Edgar Renteria with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece.
