Minnesota's Johan Santana named American League Player of the Week
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana, who went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a League-high 21 strikeouts, has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the week of September 13-19. Bank of America, the official bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the bank's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In his two starts, Santana pitched 15.0 innings, allowed nine hits and only walked one. The lefthander struck out a career-high 14 in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles and moved the Twins magic number to clinch the AL Central to two games. The 25-year-old native of Venezuela has an AL-high of 254 strikeouts - the second most ever by a Twins pitcher behind Bert Blyleven's 258 in 1973. Santana, the AL Pitcher of the Month for July and August, has not given up a run in four September starts. His streak of consecutive scoreless innings now stands at 30.

Other candidates for the weekly award were Baltimore's Jay Gibbons (AL-best .529) and Larry Bigbie (.474, 9 RBI); Dmitri Young (.357, 4 HR, AL-high 12 RBI) and Omar Infante (4 HR, AL-best 26 total bases) of the Tigers; New York's Alex Rodriguez (AL-high .952 slugging percentage) and last week's winner Derek Jeter (.458, 9 runs scored). Pitchers on this week's ballot were New York's Mike Mussina (2-0, 0.60 ERA) and Seattle's Ryan Franklin (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 CG).

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Johan Santana with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece from its Safari collection.
