PEORIA, Ariz. -- Cubs manager Rick Renteria challenged a call under the new system of expanded instant replay in the fourth inning of Wednesday night's game against the Mariners, but the call was confirmed as correct.

The Cubs' Ryan Kalish had been called out at first base by umpire Marcus Pattillo on a bang-bang play when Mariners shortstop Brad Miller threw to first baseman Justin Smoak, but Renteria came out to challenge the call. After about two minutes, the crew on the field received confirmation from the fifth umpire in the television truck that the call would stand.

The day before, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon became the first manager under the system to have a call overturned when he challenged a bobbled ball at second base against the Angels.
