The Astros have signed right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez to a Major League contract, and have designated right-handed pitcher Philip Humber for assignment, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today.
Gonzalez, who will wear #31, will be in uniform for this afternoon's 1:10 p.m. game vs. the Texas Rangers at Minute Maid Park.
Gonzalez was in Spring Training with the Astros in 2013 as a non-roster player, posting a 1-0 record in four appearances with a 1.80 ERA (2ER/10IP). He broke camp with the Major League club before being designated for assignment by the Astros on April 5. He was then claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays and would appear in three games for their big club, all in relief. His last appearance for Toronto was on May 8 at Tampa Bay. After being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on May 9, he opted for free agency.
Gonzalez originally joined the Astros late in 2012, posting a 3-1 record in six September starts with a 5.04 ERA. The Astros were 4-2 in his six starts.
The 2013 season was Humber's first with the Astros. He was 0-8 in nine appearances (seven starts) with a 9.59 ERA. After a solid Spring Training (2-2, 1.73 ERA), Humber began the season in the Astros starting rotation.
