Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the Red Sox on Sunday agreed on a one-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration.
General manager Ben Cherington announced the agreement. Terms were not disclosed except that the contract for the 26-year-old veteran of five seasons is not guaranteed. Saltalamacchia earned $750,000 last season, when he played in a career-most 103 games and batted .235 with 16 homers and 65 RBIs. The agreement leaves the Red Sox with seven players still eligible for salary arbitration, including MVP runner-up Jacoby Ellsbury and designated hitter David Ortiz. The others are pitchers Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard, Alfredo Aceves and Franklin Morales; and infielder Mike Aviles.Tom Singer is a national reporter for MLB.com. Follow @Tom_Singer on Twitter.
