Red Sox announce Spring Training slate
Grapefruit League schedule opens Feb. 27 against Twins
BOSTON -- Just as the winter chill starts to hit the New England area, it might be comforting to know that the Red Sox have unveiled their 36-game Spring Training schedule for 2011.
Baseball will start up again for the Sox on Feb. 26 with an exhibition doubleheader against local college foes Boston College (1:05 p.m. ET) and Northeastern University (6:05 p.m.). The games will be played at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla., the Spring Training home of Boston for one last season. The Red Sox will remain in Fort Myers for decades to come, but they will open a new stadium in 2012.
Boston's 2011 team -- which is still in the process of being constructed by general manager Theo Epstein -- will open its Grapefruit League schedule on Feb. 27 at 7:05 p.m. against the Twins at Hammond Stadium, which is Minnesota's home venue and also located in Fort Myers.
The Red Sox will play their first Grapefruit League home game against the Twins on Feb. 28, the second of five exhibition meetings against Minnesota.
In a rarity last year, the Red Sox didn't play the Yankees last spring. But the rivals will be back at it under the Florida sun this year, playing a 7:10 p.m. game on March 4 in Tampa, Fla. The Yankees will visit City of Palms Park in a 7:05 p.m. contest on March 14.
Tickets for all Spring Training home games are scheduled to go on sale on Jan. 8. Tickets will remain at 2010 prices, marking the fifth time in the last six years exhibition ticket prices haven't changed.
Included in the exhibition slate will be four matchups with the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays, while Boston will play twice against the Blue Jays, who are now managed by former Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell.
The Mets come to City Of Palms Park in the annual St. Patrick's Day game, which starts at 1:05 p.m. on March 17. The Braves, Phillies, Marlins and Cardinals will also visit the Sox during the spring.
The official reporting date for pitchers and catchers is Sunday, Feb. 13, and they will hold their first workout two days later. The full squad is due to report on Feb. 17, with the first full-squad workout scheduled for Feb. 19.
The club will work out at the player development complex at 4301 Edison Ave. in Fort Myers until the exhibition season starts. All workouts are open to the public and free of charge. Shuttle buses are provided from City of Palms Park for $2 per person round trip.
Boston will finish Spring Training with exhibition games at Minute Maid Park in Houston against the Astros on March 30 and 31. The Sox open the regular season on April 1 in Arlington, Texas, against the defending American League champion Rangers.
