Unheralded Pimentel gets Futures Game nod
Young Class A pitcher to represent Red Sox in Anaheim
Though he might not carry the name recognition of some of the other prospects in the Red Sox's farm system, Stolmy Pimentel has earned himself a trip to Anaheim for the 12th annual XM All-Star Futures Game.
The rosters were unveiled on Tuesday, and Pimentel is the lone Boston Minor Leaguer who will be on hand for the showcase event, which will be held on July 11.
The 12th annual Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on XM 175. MLB.com will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game.
Pimentel is a right-hander from the Dominican Republic who was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent on July 2, 2006.
"Stolmy did a tremendous job preparing himself for the season, and worked hard to continuously improve upon his fastball quality and curveball," said Red Sox director of player development Mike Hazen. "He is very mature and poised for someone so young, and this is much deserved recognition for his season."
Pimentel is 20 years old.
Pitching for Class A Salem of the Carolina League, Pimentel is 5-5 with a 3.63 ERA this season. In 67 innings, he has 49 strikeouts and has held opponents to a .256 average.
