Sox honored by lymphoma foundation

Lester on hand as team awarded in pregame ceremony

09/15/09 7:59 PM ET

BOSTON -- The Red Sox received the Lymphoma Research Foundation's inaugural Hope Award in a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park on Tuesday, marking the sixth annual World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD).

The honor, recently developed to commend individuals, corporations and organizations that support LRF's mission to eradicate lymphoma and serve those touched by the disease, was presented to the Red Sox for their ongoing commitment to raising public awareness about lymphoma.

Boston pitcher Jon Lester, diagnosed with a rare but treatable form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2006 before returning to the Majors in 2007, was on hand for the award presentation.

Members of LRF's Massachusetts chapter distributed information on WLAD and their foundation on Tuesday, and messages appeared on the Fenway Park video board.

Launched by the International Lymphoma Coalition in 2004, WLAD provides a platform for doctors, nurses, patient support groups, patients and their families to share vital knowledge about lymphoma, particularly its signs and symptoms and how it affects lives of thousands of people around the world.

A founding member of the Lymphoma Coalition, LRF is the nation's largest voluntary health organization devoted exclusively to funding lymphoma research and providing patients and health care professionals with critical information on the disease.
