The puck is about to drop in The Fens. The National Hockey League is set to hold a "major announcement" on Wednesday at Fenway Park, and speculation is that the Red Sox's historic house will host the 2010 NHL Winter Classic. The NHL's annual outdoor extravaganza -- played in 2008 in Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium and earlier this year in Chicago's Wrigley Field -- would pit the Boston Bruins against an unnamed opponent. But there have long been rumors that the 2010 Winter Classic would be a New Year's Day attraction in Boston. The Bruins' 2009-2010 scheduled has not yet been announced. Wednesday's media event, being held the day after Major League Baseball's 80th All-Star Game in St. Louis, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET at Fenway Park.Tom Singer is a reporter for MLB.com.
