- Cast your TYIB votes now
The fans who witnessed those exciting moments all year long now have a chance to have their voices heard via online balloting. The ballot boxes will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday. In 2007, a record 9.6 million votes were cast for the TYIB Awards, and that figure could be surpassed this time around as fans weigh in on the year's top hitter, manager and oddity, among others. The results of the voting will be revealed during the week of Dec. 15-19.
Dustin Pedroia has already cleaned up with awards the past few weeks, winning an American League Gold Glove Award for his stellar play at second base, capturing a spot on the AL's Silver Slugger team, and also carting home the Most Valuable Player Award.
Now, he is one of the front-runners for the TYIB Hitter of the Year. Pedroia is competing against a loaded field that also includes former teammate Manny Ramirez, Josh Hamilton, National League MVP Albert Pujols, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, Twins first baseman Justin Morneau and Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira. Pedroia had a magnificent season, tying Ichiro Suzuki for the Major League lead in hits with 213. He also scored 118 runs, drilled 54 doubles, belted 17 homers, drove in 83 runs and batted .326.
But again, it doesn't end with hitting for Pedroia. He is also a top candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, with White Sox shortstop Orlando Cabrera perhaps his top competitor.
Of course, the TYIB Awards aren't all about performances over the course of the entire season. Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester is a leading candidate for best Single-Game Performance. That performance is Lester's memorable no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals on May 19 at Fenway Park. As if the accomplishment weren't thrilling enough on its own merit, the fact that Lester beat cancer 17 months earlier made it all the more compelling.
Players like Lester and Pedroia are recent success stories to come out of Boston's increasingly strong farm system, which is very much a product of the commitment of general manager Theo Epstein. And the TYIB Awards aren't limited to players. Epstein is in the running for Top Executive, though he is challenged by several other worthy candidates, including veteran Phillies general manager Pat Gillick, who put together a World Series championship team.
Though Daisuke Matsuzaka didn't get quite the same media attention as in his rookie season, he took his game to another level for the Red Sox in 2008. Backed by an 18-3 season, Matsuzaka is one of the nominees for Starter of the Year.
Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who stole 50 bases, is up for Rookie of the Year. Ellsbury finished third in the Baseball Writers' Association of America voting for the AL Rookie of the Year.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona once again kept his team focused through the long haul of the season and nearly guided the team to yet another epic comeback in the AL Championship Series. Francona is one of the nominees for the TYIB Manager of the Year.
In the Postseason Moment of the Year competition, the Red Sox have three nominees -- Coco Crisp for his game-tying single to culminate a 10-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning of Game 5 of the ALCS, which the Sox had trailed, 7-0, just an inning earlier; J.D. Drew for winning that same game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth; and Drew again for his go-ahead homer off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez in Game 2 of the AL Division Series.
