Expect to see plenty of Red in San Fran
Many Boston faves should be on hand to play in All-Star Game
ATLANTA -- The way Mike Lowell looks at it, the impressive first half by the Red Sox should make for a good-sized Boston contingent making the trip to San Francisco for the 78th All-Star Game on July 10.
"A lot of guys are having good first halves so far, so I hope the Red Sox are well represented," Lowell said. "I think we have such a good following around the country. It would be nice for us to kind of give that back, see if we can get a handful of guys there. It would be nice."
Lowell is second to Alex Rodriguez at third base in the latest round of the American League balloting. But he has a couple of teammates leading the pack, and it's no surprise who they are.
David "Big Papi" Ortiz leads the field at first base. Manny Ramirez, an All-Star every year since 1998, is second in the outfield.
Though first baseman Kevin Youkilis isn't on the ballot, he will be eligible as a reserve on the player's ballot.
Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times with the Monster 2007 All-Star online Ballot at MLB.com and all 30 club sites until June 28, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Fenway Park balloting ended on June 16.
Fans will again be given the opportunity to cast an All-Star vote immediately following the 2007 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Chevrolet, which will be televised by Turner Sports on Sunday, July 1. Baseball fans around the world will be able to select the final player on each All-Star team via the Monster.com 2007 All-Star Final Vote.
Selecting the rosters isn't the end of the fun in 2007, either. Concluding the All-Star balloting process, fans will have the opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player presented by Chevrolet at the All-Star Game via the Monster.com 2007 All-Star Game MVP Vote at MLB.com.
The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage, while MLB.com will offer extensive online coverage and MLB Radio will have exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.
Several other Sox players are in the mix on the balloting. Dustin Pedroia, the AL Rookie of the Month in May, ranks third at second base. Shortstop Julio Lugo is fourth at his position. Captain Jason Varitek is third behind Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez and Jorge Posada at catcher. J.D. Drew (10th) and Coco Crisp (12th) are among the top 15 in the outfield.
