VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The eagerly awaited Dodgertown debut of Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was rained out in the top of the third inning with Boston leading, 5-1, on Friday afternoon.
Matsuzaka allowed a first-inning run on a double by leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal, a sacrifice bunt by Juan Pierre and an RBI single by Marlon Anderson. He retired the bottom of the Dodgers' order in the second.
The Red Sox slugged three home runs off Hong-Chih Kuo, dealing a blow to his chances of winning the Dodgers' fifth starter job. Homering were Eric Hinske, Jason Varitek and Wily Mo Pena. Hinske's was a three-run shot. Kuo also walked Matsuzaka in his only at-bat, even though the Red Sox pitcher was told not to swing at any pitches.
