Red Sox prospects, veterans cap off successful Winter League

Red Sox catching prospect John Otness enjoyed an outstanding season for the West Oahu CaneFires. The 25-year-old, who signed with Boston as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, hit safely in 17 of 25 games and finished the Hawaii Winter Baseball season batting .313 with two homers, 14 runs scored and 10 RBIs.

Otness' surprise season helped the CaneFires to a second-place finish in the HWB's West Division behind the North Shore Honu.

Here's how the rest of the Red Sox prospects fared in various Winter Leagues:

Arizona Fall League

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF -- The former first-round pick batted .276 with 18 runs scored, three RBIs and seven stolen bases in 25 games for the Peoria Javelinas.

Dustin Brown, C -- Brown hit .239 with one homer, eight runs scored and six RBIs in 20 games for the Javelinas.

Chad Spann, 3B/1B -- The 23-year-old had a solid season for the Javelinas, batting .268 with one homer, 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 21 games.

Lenny DiNardo, LHP -- DiNardo went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 games for the Javelinas. Over 13 1/3 innings, he gave up 12 hits and five walks while striking out 16 batters.

Barry Hertzler, RHP -- The Providence, R.I., native completed the season 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 games with the Javelinas.

Kyle Jackson, RHP -- Despite posting a 6.23 ERA in 11 games with the Javelinas, Jackson led the AFL with six wins.

David Pauley, RHP -- Pauley was 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA in seven starts for the Javelinas. He led the team with 26 2/3 innings pitched, but the righty surrendered 36 hits and six walks while striking out 14.

Hawaii Winter Baseball

Ryan Phillips, LHP -- Phillips made just two starts for the CaneFires. Over four hitless frames, the 22-year-old struck out seven and walked two.

Venezuelan Winter League

Edgar Martinez, RHP -- The 25-year-old reliever went 0-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 21 regular-season games for the Pastora de los Llanos, who did not qualify for the playoffs.

Jose Alvarez, LHP -- The 17-year-old southpaw did not pitch for the Caribes de Oriente after Nov. 24. He ended the season 0-1 with a 14.09 ERA in nine games, with opponents batting .395 against him. The Caribes also did not make the playoffs.

Tony Granadillo, SS -- Granadillo went 1-for-2 with an RBI in four regular-season games with the Tigres de Aragua. The infielder did not appear in the postseason.

Luis Antonio Jimenez, 1B -- Jimenez hit .250 with one homer, 10 runs scored and five RBIs in 13 playoff games with the Cardenales de Lara. During the regular season, the 24-year-old batted .302 with four homers, 24 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 42 games.

Dominican Winter League

Alberto Castillo, C -- Castillo bounced back from a subpar performance in the DWL semifinals (.125 batting average) by going 9-for-23 with one homer, seven runs scored and four RBIs in seven games for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Championship Series. The veteran catcher hit .288 with four homers, 18 runs scored and 16 RBIs in 42 regular-season games.

Brandon Moss, OF -- The Double-A Eastern League playoff hero batted .228 with five homers, 16 RBIs and 15 runs scored in 29 games for the Cibaenas. He did not participate in the playoffs.

Travis Hughes, RHP -- Hughes recorded one save and a 6.00 ERA in six games with the Aguilas Cibaenas. The righty did not pitch in the playoffs.

Ed Rogers, INF -- The 28-year-old hit .265 with one homer, 23 runs scored, four RBIs and nine stolen bases in 45 regular-season games for the Estrellas de Oriente, who did not make the playoffs.

Luis Soto, OF -- Soto hit .250 with one run scored in eight playoff games for the Azucareros del Este. He went 1-for-5 with an RBI in two games during the regular season.

Sandy Madera, C/1B -- Madera hit .267 with one homer, three runs scored and one RBI in seven games for the Azucareros del Este and did not play in the postseason.

Wily Mo Pena, OF -- After a subpar semifinal series in which he hit .091 with four RBIs and one run scored in 14 games, Pena bounced back with a solid showing in the Championship Series. He batted .269 with five runs scored and two RBIs in seven games for the Aguilas Cibaenas. The big leaguer was 1-for-8 in two regular-season games.
