FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The defending World Series champion Red Sox opened the Grapefruit League season by taking a 4-3 win over the Twins on Thursday night at a rainy City of Palms Park.

The score was tied at 1 in the fourth inning when Kevin Youkilis' bases-loaded single off J.D. Durbin scored Jason Varitek with the go-ahead run.

Info:

In the eighth inning, Boston's Shawn Wooten banged a solo home run to left field off Minnesota's Trey Hodges.

In the top of the ninth, Terry Tiffee doubled and scored. Brent Abernathy also singled and scored an unearned run.

Making his Red Sox debut, starter Matt Clement gave up one run and a hit over two innings. Clement walked one and struck out one.

Twins right-hander Kyle Lohse also had a two-inning start with a run allowed. Lohse surrendered two hits and notched one strikeout.

The Boston victory gave the club a 1-0 lead in the spring crosstown rivals' Mayor's Cup series. The two teams will play five more times in March.
