Nixon out till May; Nomar OK
Garciaparra should play by Opening Night

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When the Red Sox open their season under the lights of Camden Yards on April 4, Trot Nixon will not be in right field. But the club is still hopeful that Nomar Garciaparra will be batting fourth and playing shortstop.

Nixon (mild disc herniation) is projected to be out for six weeks, meaning his first game of the season probably won't be until the first week of May. Gabe Kapler will likely be the primary replacement in right field, though first baseman Kevin Millar can play there.

Garciaparra, who showed up Friday morning with a boot on his ailing right Achilles heel, will be out for two weeks, which keeps open the possibility that he'll be ready to go when the games start for real. He took an MRI Thursday in Fort Myers, which showed mild right Achilles tendinitis.

"I still plan on being there on Opening Day," Garciaparra said. "I'll deal with it when it comes. Right now we're just focusing on the week. The good thing is it's happening now and not in the middle of the season."
