Lowe leads Sox past Orioles

BALTIMORE -- Derek Lowe continued his dominance over the Orioles this season, and Nomar Garciaparra and Manny Ramirez each had two hits as Boston beat Baltimore, 4-2, in front of 32,648 fans Friday at Camden Yards.

Lowe's fourth win over the Orioles bumped his record to 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 2002, including a near no-hitter April 5. Lowe was 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA in six relief games against the O's last season.

Of course, Lowe, who has won three straight starts, got some offense from his teammates at key moments Friday. The Red Sox's big inning was the fifth; granted, they scored only two runs, but the O's never got anything major going after that.

Lowe allowed only Brook Fordyce's sixth-inning RBI double after Boston went up 4-1, then gave way to the bullpen. Lowe gave up two earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings.

The Sox took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. O's starter Pat Hentgen walked Jason Varitek to lead off the inning before recording the first out. Hentgen then issued consecutive walks to Rey Sanchez and Johnny Damon. One out later, Garciaparra lined a 1-1 double to deep left field, which scored Varitek and Sanchez.

Garciaparra's double moved him one two-bagger ahead of Tris Speaker into second place on the Red Sox's all-time doubles list.

Alan Embree worked a scoreless eighth, and Ugueth Urbina retired the side in order in the ninth for his 37th save.

Shea Hillenbrand reached base via a fielder's choice in the first inning and scored on Ramirez's single to center two batters later, which gave Boston a 1-0 lead.

Cliff Floyd led off the sixth inning with a homer to left field -- which cleared the wall by mere feet -- on an 0-2 pitch from Hentgen. Hentgen retired the Red Sox in order after that and was replaced by Rick Bauer to start the seventh.

Bauer retired all five Boston batters he faced; B.J. Ryan sent down all four batters he faced -- including striking out three of them; and Jorge Julio induced a flyout from the only batter he faced in the ninth.

Hillenbrand had seven assists at third base.
