Catcher Jason Varitek and right-handed pitcher Paul Byrd decline salary arbitration offers12/08/2008 12:52 AM ET
BOSTON, MA-The Red Sox Sunday night were notified that free agents catcher Jason Varitek and righthanded pitcher Paul Byrd have declined the team's offers of salary arbitration.
Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, clubs retain the right to negotiate and/or enter into a contract agreement with any of their free agents, regardless of whether arbitration was offered and/or declined. There are no deadlines for such negotiations and/or agreements.
The Red Sox would be eligible to receive compensation for Varitek, a type A free agent, and Byrd, a type B free agent.
Varitek posted a .220 batting average with 13 home runs and 43 RBI over 131 games in 2008, his 12th major league campaign with the Red Sox. Byrd combined for an 11-12 record and a 4.60 ERA in 30 starts with Cleveland and Boston.
