Notes: Nomar likely DL-bound

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Aside from it being all but certain that Nomar Garciaparra will be out of the lineup for Sunday's Opening Night, Red Sox manager Terry Francona also conceded the likelihood that the star shortstop will open the season on the disabled list.

In fact, barring a miracle cure for Garciaparra's ailing right Achilles tendon, Francona already seemed to be coming to grips with that scenario.

"I think it's more realistic," Francona said before Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. "If he comes in tomorrow and all of a sudden says he has a miracle, we'll make room for him. I just don't know if that's realistic."

Francona is already planning a lineup for the opener that will have Pokey Reese at shortstop and David Ortiz in the cleanup hole.
